Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
