In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
