They're Applying in America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president started showing everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – really, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the leader try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.

It is emphatically not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the attacker; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide the person your additional clothing as well.

The apparent and straightforward reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a form of profound affection concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Highest Among Us

So I have been heartened to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We shall require to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it unique and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both meekness and conviction, a mixture that genuine national faithful should be comfortable with.
